Lightning Interception on Elevated Building

چکیده
-Lightning protection air terminals are placed on structures and other grounded objects with the purpose of capturing the lightning stroke. A well estimation of the lateral protection distance is crucial in predicting the protection area of the lightning rod. This paper focus on a 3-D numerical modelling of lightning attachment based on physical phenomena leading to the formation and the development of the positive upward discharges. The application of our physical model was made for rods on earthed structures. Our model takes into account the real nature of the protected area. The influence of the edges and the corners of the structure on the LPS is investigated. The purpose of our 3D model is to present numerical predictions in order to ensure an efficient lightning protection system. Key-Words:-Lightning, electric fields, protection, finite element method, modeling.

متن کاملStudy on the Effectiveness of Single Lightning Rods by a Fractal Approach
Lightning rod is widely used in lightning protection systems. It is of practical interest to analyze the protective performance of a lightning rod taking into consideration some stochastic behaviors of the lightning process. The effectiveness of a single lightning rod is investigated in this paper using a fractal growth approach based on dielectric breakdwon model (DBM). The effective intercept...

A review of lightning protection concepts introduced by Benjamin Franklin (18th century) and James Clerk Maxwell (19th century) is given. Modern approaches to lightning protection of various structures and systems are discussed. In particular, the widely used electrogeometrical model (one version of which is the Rolling Sphere Method) and the topological shielding are presented. Bonding require...
متن کاملStudy of Effects of Lightning Strikes to an Aircraft
In-flight statistics show that most strikes occurred 3-5 km above sea level, where the temperature is ~ 0C (Uman & Rakov, 2003; Larsson, 2002). There are two different types of lightning strikes to aircraft. The first type is that the aircraft initiates the lightning discharge when it is found in the intense electric field region of a thundercloud, and the second is the interception by the air...

DECEMBER 2002 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS. Properly designed conventional lightning protection systems for ground-based structures serve to provide lightning attachment points and paths for the lightning current to follow from the attachment points into the ground without harm to the protected structure. Such systems are basically composed of three elements: 1) “air t...
